Supreme Court should enforce its orders regarding the JIT: Khurram Nawaz Gundapur in a media statement
Prayer ceremonies on the 11th anniversary of the martyrs of Model Town, leaders visited the graves of martyrs
On the 11th anniversary of the martyrs of Model Town, the organizations of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) across the country held prayer ceremonies. Leaders visited the graves of the martyrs and laid wreaths of flowers. A recitation of the Quran was held at Jamy Shaykh-ul-Islam. The founder and patron-in-chief of Minhaj-ul-Quran, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, addressed via video link and said, "I urge the powerful circles to open the closed doors of justice regarding the Model Town tragedy. Let the JIT present its charge sheet. Let the process of justice begin. The nation should know who is responsible for the massacre of June 17, 2014, and why innocent and unarmed citizens were killed. Why was the blood of women shed?" He added, "We are still in the courts, seeking justice."
Dr. Qadri further explained that the JIT was formed on the orders of the Supreme Court on January 3, 2019, but for the past five years, the Lahore High Court has been preventing it from functioning, even though 281 individuals from both sides have already recorded their statements. On February 13, 2020, the Supreme Court issued another order to resolve the JIT-related case within three months. However, even after five years, this order has not been implemented. Therefore, we urge the Supreme Court to enforce its orders."
Khurram Nawaz Gundapur, Secretary-General of Pakistan Awami Tehreek, spoke to the media after laying a wreath of flowers at the Model Town martyrs' memorial. He said, "We request the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court to make decisions on all pending appeals, including the JIT, so that the process of justice can move forward. A stay order has been issued on the JIT formed under the Supreme Court’s directive by a request from an accused constable, and it has been ongoing for five years. This is incomprehensible. When the weak and helpless are denied justice, their cries reach the heavens. Nations are only destroyed by injustice."
On this occasion, Deputy Secretary Generals Engineer Muhammad Rafiq Najm, the complainant in the Model Town case Jawad Hameed, Brigadier (Retd) Umar Hayat, Noorullah Siddiqui, Colonel (Retd) Muhammad Khalid, Mian Zahid Islam, Mazhar Mahmood Alvi, Rana Waheed Shehzad, Shafqat Mughal, Dr. Mir Asif Akbar, Sardar Umar Daraz Khan, Sohail Ahmed Reza, Naeemuddin Chaudhry Advocate, Hafiz Ghulam Fareed, Shakeel Tahir, Tayyib Zia, and others were present.
Khurram Nawaz Gundapur also offered a prayer at the martyrs' memorial and prayed for the elevation of the ranks of the martyrs of Model Town. On the 11th anniversary of the tragedy, he visited the homes of the martyrs' families and expressed his commitment that the struggle for justice will continue.
Khurram Nawaz Gundapur also met with Tanzila Amjad Shaheed’s daughter, Bisma, on this occasion.
